Silver-staining nucleolar organizers regions (AgNORs) were observed in paraffin sections from 40 cases of gastric intestinal glands (20 chronic gastritis, 20 dysplasia), 10 normal and 10 gastric cancer. The number of detectable AgNORs were signiticantly higher in the intestinal metaplastic epithelium than in the normal mucosa. Compared with the normal, chronic gastritis and slight dysplasia group, the AgNORs from the metaplastic glands with moderate or severe dysplasia were of different size, often became aggregative and their distribution was in disorder; these changes were similarly found in gastric cancer. The above findings suggest that the intestinal metaplasia is active proliferation of gastric mucosa cells or lesion trans towards exacerbation.
