New LIDAR System Equipped with a High Resolution

LIU Yan jing(Orbis GIS, Inc., Blacksburg, VA, USA)  
The newly developed LIDAR (laser detection and ranging) system combined with the world highest resolution color digital camera (commercially available) and/or a hyperspectral imagery camera is described. It is also integrated with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Global Positioning System (GPS). These systems are combined to calculate the exact position and orientation of the sensors as they relate to the earth's surface at the time of data acquisition. The need for ground control panels, tedious and expensive ground GPS measurements, film development and stereo plotting are unnecessary for DEM generation and image rectification. The digital camera sub system consists of a large format 4096×4096 pixel array with 8 bit dynamic range that can collect clear (smear free) imagery with better than 6 inch resolution at 240 kmph ground speed with its high speed shutter system. The camera system exceeds the USGS camera calibration specification. Moreover, it comes with a high resolution hyperspectral imagery camera, so multispectral pixels are now associated with individual XYZ values to discriminate between roads, buildings, trees, water and other features.
