Automatic vectorization of contour lines from scanned color topographic map based on spatial interpolation

In this paper, an automatic extration and vectorization method was presented for contour lines from scanned color topographic maps based on spatial interpolation. Firstly, the grid contour lines were extracted with color segmentation technology from the topographic map scanned and automatic vectorization for the contour lines (CLs1) was done. Then, these contour lines were assigned values and DEM was created. Thirdly, the contour lines (CLs2) were extracted with the same elevation as CLs1 from DEM. Finally, CLs1 was recuperated with CLs2 and got the connecting contour lines. This method was proved efficient and improved the level of automatic vectorization of contour lines.
