Urban expansion and its driving forces in Chengdu city was quantitative analyzed by methods of buffer analysis and factors analysis based on TM data and GIS spatial analysis techniques in the paper. The result showed that urban spatial expansion within different buffer zones was obviously, the urban expansion mode was obvious circle-type,with strong spatial concentration close to the city centre area, and the spatial agglomeration weakened from the city center to the periphery area. The urban expansion presented different space differentiation. The result also showed that the main driving forces leading to urban area expansion in Chengdu city were region economic development, population increasing, and urbanization level.RS and GIS technique is an important tool to monitor land use and surface changes.
