An automatic detection algorithm of lunar craters based on feature matching

An automatic detection algorithm based on feature matching was proposed in this paper to extract the edge of craters.Considering the five typical characters in the image of a crater,firstly the entire image was divided into three parts based on Otsu method: the highlight,the shadow and the background. Secondly the region growing method was used to aggregate the discrete areas. Then,the highlight and shadow areas which were belonged to the same crater were founded out based on the feature mapping method. Finally,the Sobel algorithm was used to determine the GCP of the edge and an assumed circle of the edge was achieved by using the GCP founded before. By using the images of"CE-1"and "CE-2"as the data source,result from the experiment indicated that this algorithm had a better performance when applied in the areas where latitude is high,and this algorithm has been successfully used for further analysis in the digital platform for moon.
