A method of reconstructing 3D powerlines from airborne LiDAR point clouds

Aiming at the insufficiency of studying on reconstructing 3Dpowerlines in the power line patrols using LiDAR systems mounted on helicopters,the paper proposed a 3Dreconstruction method of reconstructing the power lines from the airborne LiDAR point clouds of long overhead power transmission corridor,which was composed of three main steps,including clustering of power line LiDAR points,detection of the suspension points,and modeling of power lines:first,3Dconnected component analysis was proposed to cluster the power line points into many segments,each segment including the points belonging to one powerline;second,on the XOYplane,a line was fitted by the points in a segment,the points in a segment were indexed by a row of grids,and the second derivative was employed to separate the points into several sub-segments,each including the points belonging to one powerline in a span;at last,in the modeling of each powerline in a span,the scale of each point projected on the fitted line was regarded as a parameter of the parabola.Experimental result showed that the proposed method would be robust to many conditions such as number of the routines or power lines,various types of power lines or their arrangement,length of a span,and curvature of the routine with high efficiency and high accuracy of automatically reconstructing 3Dpowerlines.
