POINT-MASS MODEL OF LOCAL GRAVITY FIELD

This paper describes the basic principle of solving the boundary value problem in physical geodesy by establishing the point-mass model with scattered measurements on the earth's surface. A comparison of this method with integral method and least squares collocation is given, also made in an analysis of their relation. On the basis of test data, this paper discusses the choice of density and depth of the point-mass model and it's particularity in characterizing disturbing gravity field. A technique of constituting this model suitable for computation is suggested. Experiment indicates that the point-mass model is very effective in computing quantities related to gravity field. It's main advantage is that fewer parameter can be chosen, in addition to simplicity and flexibility. Nevertheless, it requires solving system of equations with larger degree and determining the optimum structure of this model.
