In the last few decades, much work has been done in the graphic arts industry connected with the improvement of colour reproduction. This has been directed at the quality and economics of production, but more importantly the consistency between reproductions. It has been demonstrated by many workers that consistency can only be achieved by proper control of the parameters in reproduction which affect the reproduced colours and image details, and this must be the starting point of any reproduction system. Toget an improved systematic approach of colour reproduction, some experiments have been done. This paper shows how a systematic approach to reproduction of coloured images may be undertaken, and the following techniques necessary for establishing a specifications are described, such as analysis and classification of coloured originals, determination of the effect of viewing conditions on the assessment of coloured originals and their prints, determination of printing characteristics (including grey balance, print contrast, colour contrast, optimum ink level, dot gain, printing trapping, resolution and exposure latitude of printing plates).The new improved systematic approach for the reproduction of coloured images can be summarised as follows: original analysis and densitometric measurements, determination of the logarithmic range of the original subject, definition of the intermediate tone reproduction curve and the tone reproduction curve, defining the four separation images required. The result of the experiments indicates that the improved approach can provide the flexibility required and be able of the required refinement needed. In addition, it is proved that this approach has the systematic, predictable and common-application characters, and that it is sufficient to improve the reproduction quality and to decrease the cost.
