Study on the relationship between leukoaraiosis and cerebrovascular diseases

LUAN Ping HUA Qian-qian LU Bing-xun PAN Su-yue.Department of Neurology,Nanfang Hospital,Southern Medical University,Guangzhou 510515,China
Objective To explore the relation of leukoaraiosis(LA)with cerebrovascular diseases, especially ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Methods A total of 277 and 198 patients, who were hospitalized in our hospital and definitely diagnosed by MRI as cerebrovascular diseases and LA respectively, were recruited in this study. The incidence of LA in patients with cerebrovascular diseases at different ages was analyzed;the incidence of LA in patients with cerebrovascular diseases of different types and the incidence of cerebrovascular diseases of different types in patients with LA were comparatively analyzed. Results The LA incidence in patients with cerebrovascular diseases rose with the increasing of age,so age is an independent risk factor for LA,whose impact on the LA incidence is much greater than that of cerebrovascular diseases;the incidences of LA in patients with cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral ischemia were respectively 30.3% and 48.8%;the incidences of hemorrhagic and ischemic cerebrovascular diseases in patients with LA were respectively 5.1% and 60.1%;the incidence of infarction in basal ganglia regions in the 47 cases suffering from LA with lacuna infarction was 63.8%,namely the highest occurrence rate. Conclusion The presence of LA can be regarded as a predictor of infaretion.LA should be taken into account clinically as a potential predictor of stroke.
