Phase Precipitated in a Mg-Y-Nd Alloy

The β phase precipitated during ageing Mg-Y-Nd alloy is studied by transmission electron micrscopy. The observations of the configuration of β phases are performed along the perpendicular[0001]and[1120]zone axes of the matrix. The results show that the β phase has three variants that grow along three〈1120〉 directions of the matrix, and the β phase grows faster along〈0001〉_αand〈1100〉_αdirections than along the third direction〈1100〉. The morphology of the β phases is illustrated according to the analysis of the directional misfit between the β phase and the matrix.
