Microwave Sintering of Zinc Oxide Varistors in Different Atmospheres

ZnO varistors are prepared in different atmospheres including air, N2 and O2 by microwave sintering processes. The microstructures and electrical properties of samples sintered in three kinds of atmospheres are investigated. And the interactions between microwave and materials in different atmospheres are discussed. The results show that in lower temperature ZnO varistors sintered in rich-N2 atmosphere are more easily densified than in O,. However, the electrical properties of samples sintered in N2 abruptly degrade above 1000℃because of the deterioration of densification in the high temperature.
