The Synthesis of Diamond-coated Drills by MWPCVD

This paper reports preliminary experimental results on diamond coatings deposited on the cemented carbide drill bits, with a diameter of 0.8mm. Prior to the deposition, in order to remove Co, the drill bits are etched with HNO3 (HNO3 : H2O=1 : 4) for 60 seconds. A microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition(MWPCVD) device is used in the experiment. During the diamond deposition, a concentrated glow discharge is observed around the tips of the drills, and diamond coatings are sparingly deposited at those sites. In subsequent experiments, metal wire shielding is used to avoid the glow discharge concentration around the tips of the samples. The surface morphology and quality of diamond coatings are examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Energy Disperse Spectroscopy(EDS) and Raman Spectroscopy(Raman). The cutting performance of the diamond-coated drill is studied by drilling SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composite. The diamond coatings are of a high quality having a smooth surfaces, small grain size and good adhesive strength.
