Surface Treatment on Carbon Fiber by Cold Plasma

Carbon fiber surface was treated by cold plasma method and the result was characterized by water wettability,SEM as well as XPS.Compared with anodic oxidation method,the surface properties of carbon fibers can be effectively changed by low temperature plasma method.Water wettability test showed that the surface of the carbon fiber treated by cold plasma was polar with high hydrophilic properties.SEM investigation showed that the groove on carbon fiber surface made by cold plasma method was much deeper,resulted in stronger surface modification.XPS investigation showed that there were various polar groups(the total content was 17%)on the surface of carbon fiber treated by two methods.
