Study on Compatibility of Liquid Lithium and 316L Stainless Steel Welds

In this study,in order to provide some reference for the compatibility of liquid lithium and the pipeline material(316 Lstainless steel welds),the SEM/EDS,metallographic phase and the home-made LIBS tools were used to investigate the corroded behaviors of 316 Lstainless steel welds in liquid lithium at 350 ℃ for 500 h.The experimental results show that 316 Lstainless steel welds ware corroded in form of intergranular corrosion in liquid lithium,the weld areas corroded more seriously than base metal areas but there was no phase transition in corrosion weld surfaces.The weld surfaces about 1.55 times the amount of Li infiltration capacity that base metal surface area does,the Li penetration depth of weld and base metal areas are about 5.48μm and 3.29μm,respectively,and it is greater than cross-section corrosion loose layer thickness(~5.0μm and 3.0μm,respectively).After liquid lithium corrosion,the percentage content of C of weld surface is increased by 11.03 wt% but the percentage content of Cr,Ni,Mo and Mn are decreased by 2.28 wt%,1.01 wt%,0.47 wt% and 0.16 wt%,and Cr dissolved loss is most serious.The ratio of average Vickers hardness value of the weld surface before and after corrosion is 3.45∶1.In conclusion,the corrosion of 316 Lstainless steel in liquid lithium at 350 ℃for 500 his happened.And compared to base zone,the weld zone is easier to be corroded.
