THE MANIFESTATION OF INDUCTION-DEDUCTION ASYMMETRY IN CHINESE CULTURAL BACKGROUND

Induction-deduction asymmetry refers to people tendency to make more induction than deduction. But this asymmetry also is influenced by the culture and language. The present research examines this phenomena in Chinese background. Induction and deduction are instigated within a single paradigm in the current research. Using the tape recorder, the experimental materials are presented including elaborately selected adjective and corresponding behavior information. Dependent measures consisted of the mean number and the mean response time for each of the following responses: (1) correct recognition of "presented actually" item, (2) correct rejection of new or implied stimuli, (3) false alarms for "new" stimuli, and (4) inferences for "implied" stimuli (defined as erroneous "yes" response to those traits or behaviors that had not actually been presented but that could be inferred from the information presented) . The result suggest that induction-deduction asymmetry does not exist in the Chinese background. This article discusses the influence of culture on this phenomena.
