The Influences of the Number of Stimuli As Well As Their Presentation Mode on Time Perception in Milliseconds and Supra-seconds Range

Bi Cuihua, Huang Xiting (Faculty of Psychology, Southwest University, Key Laboratory of Cognition and Personality, Ministry of Education, Chongqing 400715)
This study used time discrimination method to explore the effect of the magnitude of dots as well as their presentation mode on time perception. During this task, the standard duration which was fixed to last 400ms within millisecond(Experiment 1)or 1600ms across supra-seconds(Experiment 2)was firstly presented. We manipulated the magnitude of dots as well as their presentation mode during the standard duration stage. Then the comparison duration appeared in the screen, following that participants were required to judge the comparison duration was longer or shorter than the standard duration. Time intervals were respectively within millisecond and supra-seconds in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2. The results from sub-second intervals showed that when these dots emerged sequentially, number magnitude significantly influenced duration perception to produce underestimation for smaller numbers and overestimation for larger numbers, while when these dots appeared simultaneously, their quantity had no effect on timing. Both the variability and sensitivity were not affected by the quantity of dots as well as their presentation mode. The results from supra-second intervals found that the magnitude of dots had effect on perceived duration under simultaneous and sequential presentation mode conditions. There was an interaction between variability and sensitivity of timing manifesting that when the dots emerged sequentially, the more these dots were, the lower the variability became and the better the sensitivity got. These findings indicated that these effects of the number of stimuli as well as their presentation mode on judged time depended on distinct processing mechanisms within different time ranges.
