An Event-related Potential Effects in a Chinese Logogriph Task: Proof from Catalytic Paradigm

Xing Qiang, Zhang Zhonglu (Psychology Department of Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006)
The electrophysiological correlates of insight and non-insight problems solving were studied using event-related potentials(ERPs)when participates guessed the Chinese logogriphs. Results showed that insight elicited a more negative ERP deflection(N300-500)than non-insight between 300 and 500 ms in most of the brain scalp regions. Subsequently, insight elicited a more positive ERP deflection(P600-1100)than non-insight in the time window of 600 and 1100 ms, maps of P600-1100 showed strong activity mostly in the central scalp region. The results indicated that the N300-500 might reflect cognition conflict in the breaking of mental set and the P600-1100 might play important roles in the forming of novel associations.
