The Time Course of Chinese Character Recognition: An ERP Evident from a Riddle Guessing Task

Luo Junlong1, Li Wenfu2, Zhang Qinglin2 (1 Education College, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai 200234; 2 School of Psychology, Southwest University, Chongqing 400715)
In the current study, high-density event-related potentials(ERPs)were recorded to examine the electrophysiological correlates of Chinese character recognition in a guessing Chinese logogriph task by using a three-stage model for learning-testing-judgment. Results showed that clear N1, P2, and N2 were elicited by the pattern recognition and semantic recognition. The higher P2 amplitude for semantic recognition than pattern recognition might be related to the early semantic processing of Chinese character. Subsequently, semantic recognition elicited a more positive ERP deflection(P300)than did pattern recognition between 300-400ms, most likely reflect the further integration of semantic processing of Chinese character. At last, semantic recognition elicited a more positive ERP deflection(LPC)than did pattern recognition at 500-600 interval, probably reflect the semantic certification of Chinese character.
