The Effects of Task Instructions and Experimental Paradigm on Pro-and Anti-saccade Performance

Xiong Jianping1,2, Li Yue3 (1 College of Educational Science, Henan Normal University, Xinxiang 453007; 2 Academy of Psychology and Behaviour, Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin 300074; 3 Department of Psychology, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510631)
In order to explore the effects of task instruction and experimental paradigm on saccade performance, a 2×3×4 three-factor within-subjects experimental design was adopted. Results:(1)The latency of prosaccade was significantly faster than that of antisaccade under any experimental paradigm;(2)In prosaccade performance only delay instruction resulted in prolonged latency significantly;(3)In antisaccade performance the effects of task instruction in different experimental paradigm were not in full accord.(4)The error rate of antisaccade in Gap paradigm was significantly lower than that in overlap and step paradigm, and latency of antisaccade in Gap paradigm was outstandingly faster than others. These results support the Competitive Race Model.
