The Effect of Post-identification Feedback on Eyewitness Identification Confidence under Varying Lineup Conditions

Using post-identification approach, we explored the effect of post-identification feedback on eyewitness′ confidence under two lineup conditions (target-present and target-absent) . Our results indicated that compared to no feedback group, positive feedback increased the confidence of eyewitness′ identification significantly. Furthermore, among no feedback group, participants making correct identification had greater confidence of identification than participants making false identification, while among positive feedback group, the difference was not significant. Additionally, under incorrect identification condition, target-present lineup resulted in significant increase in confidence of identification, whereas the effect was not significant under correct identification condition. Finally, the eyewitnesses who made a positive identification and receiving positive feedback had greater confidence than participants but not receiving feedback; participants making correct identification had higher confidence than participants making false identification. These findings suggested that there is similar post-identification feedback effect in child and adult eyewitness, and for eyewitness who made a positive identification, confidence of identification is a predict variable of accuracy.
