A novel cationic macromolecular surfactant(SMG)was prepared by modifying styrene maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) with anhydrous alcohol and 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (ETA). The characterization by FTIR, nitrogen content and solubility determination show that the acid anhydride base group in the SMG molecule were all in open loop, and some became ester bond, the nitrogen content increased to 0.372 wt%, and the quaternary ammonium salts were grafted on the SMG. SMG was soluble in water and had a lower surface activity, but it had a higher dispersibility to pigment yellow 14, and the Zeta potential of pigment were increased to +35.4mV. After surface sizing with SMG, the paper obtained a high absorbability for anionic inks, and color bleeding was reduced.
