Preparation and Characterization of Ultrafine Ceria Precursors

Ultrafine ceria precursors were synthesized by transformation technique with cerium chloride from extraction and separation production line as cerium sources and ammonium bicarbonate as precipitant. Ultrafine ceria powders were prepared via drying and calcinating the above precursors. The effects of various molar ratios of precipitant and cerium sources(molar ratios)on recovery rate,particle size(D50),and particle size distribution of the ceria precursors were studied employing X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM)and particle size analysis. The results show that the precursor is cerium hydroxide carbonate with size(D50)less than 3μm. With the increasing molar ratio of precipitant and cerium sources from 2.6 :1 to 3.5 :1,the recovery rate increases gradually while the precursor size and size distribution first decrease and then increase. When the molar ratio of precipitant and cerium sources is 3 :1,the optimum particle size distribution,the recovery rate and D50 are 0.739,98.31% and 1.790μm,respectively. Furthermore,the prepared ultrafine ceria is uniformly distributed in a very narrow size range from 0.1μm to 0.3μm.
