Differences in Value Systems and Its Reflection in Chinese and American Social Etiquettes

An awareness of the differences in value systems and social etiquette between China and United States is needed to avoid misunderstanding and communication breakdowns. Considering the origins of Chinese and western social etiquettes as well as the personal experiences of our work and study in both China and United States, the paper discusses the differences in Chinese and western cultures, social etiquette, and values. Further, the paper illuminates the different manifestations of cognition, national characters, social norms, and interpersonal relationships in China and United States. Appreciative of the cultural differences between China and West, this paper contributes to the promotion of Chinese culture as well as the enhancement of its soft power.
