New Discovery in Chengdu's Urban History

He Yi-min(Institute of Urban Studies, Sichuan University,Chengdu,Sichuan 610064)
This thesis restudied the origin of Chengdu, the biggest central city in the west China, according to the latest archaeological materials. The author doesn't agree that the urban history of Chengdu is only 2300. The successive discoveries including the ancient relic cities on the Chengdu plain, the jinsha Relic and the large pirogue coffin relic have traced the urban civilization up to 4500 years. Abundant archaeological fact has prove the Yangtze River area was also the cradle of the Chinese civilization, as well as the Huanghe River area. During thousands of years, Chengdu has developed its unique traits:centuries-old history,,unchanged location and city name, continuous civilization. In spite of interruptions and decline at times,Chengdu has been developing and expanding on the original location and becomes a large modernized city. This is rare in the urban history both of China and of the world.
