ZHOU Fengqin;School of Literature and Arts, Southwest University of Science and Technology;
In the late Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, being secluded in troupes was very common and there existed a special group composed of hermit actors. Though they claimed to be hermits, the actors actually had a strong intention to show concern about social affairs and to promote the innovation and development of drama. They were in fact both scholars and actors, who had great enthusiasm and talent on new drama. In the new era of the early 20th century, it happened that the hermit actors frolicked in the era of tide with a mark of collisions between the old and the new. They affirmed their historical presence with great social influences.
