An Empirical Study on Chinese College Students' English Word Stress Misplacement

This paper investigates the English word stress misplacement in the interlanguage system of Chinese college students at different proficiency levels(i.e., advanced, intermediate, preliminary) through perception and production tests. The results show that there are certain laws for Chinese college students' word stress misplacement, that the subjects' perception mechanism of the word stress and that of production are quite different, and that the proficiency level exerts different effects on the subjects' perception and production of the word stress. It is thus suggested that teachers combine the training of both skills in their teaching to realize the goal of perfect acquisition of English word stress.
