Relationship between changes functional ability of patients with acute spinal cord injury and severity of damage revealed with MRI

Objective To study the relationship between the changes offunctional ability of 50 patients with acute spinal cord iniury and the severityof damages with MRI. Methods 50 patients were examined with 1.5T signaMR and 72 hours after acute spinal cord injury and these changes of variousfunctional ability were recorded.The relationship of the area of the lesion,theclassification of MRI signals, the compression of the spinal cord, the fractureof the vertebral body and the narrowing of the vertebral tube with the changesof nerve functions was explored. Results The area of the lesion, theclassification of MRI signals, the spinal cord compression and the narrowingof the vertebral tube were important factors to result in changes of nervefunctions(P0.05), but the fracture of vertebral body was a factor of littlesignificance(P0.05). Conclusion The area of lesion,the classification of MRIsignals, the spinal cord compression and the narrowing of vertebral tube areimportant factors to result in the changes of nerve functions while the fractureof vertebral body is a factor of little significance.[
