PHYSIOLOGICAL AND ECOLOGICAL STUDIES ON DRY MATTER PRODUCTION AND CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM OF SUGARBEET (Beta vulgaris L) V--STUDIES ON DIFFERENCES IN THE SOLUBLE SUGAR DISTRIBUTION AND SUCROSE CUMULATION AMONG THE TYPES

The difference in dynamic distribution of the main soluble sugars and sucrose cumulation among the three types (high sugar type, standard type and high yield type) of sugarbeets were studied by 14C labelling. The percentages of glucose and fructose in the leaf decreased at first and then increased during the growth period. However, their percentages in the root tended to decrease in this period. The proportion of sucrose in the leaf increased at first and then decreased, but its percentage in the root rept increasing all the time. The metabolic intensity of the sugars changed with the stages of the growth period. The percentages of glucose. fructose and sucrose in the leaf of the high sugar type were lower than those in other types of the sugarbeets. On the contrary, the percentages of these three sugars in the root were higher than those in other types. This indicated that the leaf of this type of sugarbeet was more efficient in suerose synthesis, transportation and distribution, resulting in large amount of sucrose cumulated in the root.
