Retrieval of land surface microwave emissivity by using satellite-borne AMSU data

In the paper, retrieval of the terrain surface microwave emissivity from the remote sensing data of the AMSU-A is studied. Based upon radiative transfer simulation, the AI index is defined for emissivity retrieval. Comparisons of the AI and NESDIS′s retrievals show that the AI retreval is better than NESDIS, especially for the cases of high emissivity over 0.92. The effect of sub-pixels is also discussed. The bare soil percentage in one AMSU-A image pixel is derived from IGBP database. Making correction on the effect of sub-pixel scale, a better retrieval for the bare soil component can be obtained. The surface emissivity retrieval is applicable to application of atmosphere and land classification, and is of greatly helpful to numerical weather prediction.
