Russian Peasants' Belief in the Orthodox Eastern Church

LEI Li-ping (Center for Northeast Asian Studies of Jilin University,Jilin Changchun,130012,China)
The Russian peasants' traditional faith has greatly permeated their belief in the Orthodox Eastern Church (OEC). In the name of worshiping OEC, some Russian peasants apply the doctrines of polytheism, and hold traditional beliefs. With a lower social class status and illiteracy, the Russian peasants blindly worship the sacred images of the OEC, and concentrate their attention on mysticism. The study not only provides an insight into the conservativeness and backwardness of the OEC culture which was the result of the reformation of the Byzantine Orthodox Eastern Church by Russian peasants, but also the Russian peasants' impediment to the progress and reformation in Russian historical development. More importantly, the study reveals the nature of frequent social and political crises brought about by cultural backwardness in Russia which was mostly composed of peasants before the Russian Revolution. The basic cause of Russian backwardness lies in its peasants.
