The basement rocks beneath loose fluvial deposits in the Zhengjiang area along the Yangtze River have been regarded as the Upper Cretaceous Pukou Formation by previous investigators on the basis of limited outcrop and drill core data.A restudy of drill cores shows that these basement rocks consist mainly of volcaniclastic sediments that are lithologically similar to Lower Cretaceous rocks in this region. Thus, the basement rocks are reclassified as the Lower Cretaceous Shangdang and Gecun formations.
