Information Exchange Activities and Student Interaction Network in Distance Learning

Chen Li
The research purpose of this paper is to analyze the laws of information exchange in the hierarchical model for student and teacher interaction. The research methods I adopt are surveys and case studies. First, I investigate how students engage in different types of information exchange activities with various agents in the distance learning process and find out what these activities are about and how they are carried out. Second, based on the analysis of these information exchange activities, I explain the concept of "interaction distance" in learning and teaching and describe different methods to establish information exchange networks for students. Third, I use the College of Online Education in Beijing Normal University as an example to summarize the major information exchange activities carried out by students and to compare the different interaction distances between students and the interaction agents in the learning and teaching process, and finally to attempt to construct an information exchange network diagram for the students in the College. Through this case study, I explain the effectiveness and value of student information exchange networks in comparing the assistance rendered by the interaction agents to students. The findings of this research can be used to compare and analyze the various effective means for the interaction agents to facilitate the learning process of students, and to put forward a better understanding of the laws of information exchange.
