The Use of Thermotherapy in the Treatment of Malignant Tumors

More and more attention is being paid re- searching the effects of thermotherapy on malignant tumors.Hyperthermia treatment is a type of physio- therapy in which body tissue is heated to a specific temperature range, for a specific time, resulting in the eradication of the tumor tissue, while causing no harm to the healthy tissue. The tumor, because of its abnormal blood vessel system,is not able resist the increase in temperature like the healthy tis- sue.Thermotherapy is considered as the fifth treat- ment for malignant tumor following operation,ra- diatherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. There are two methods of hyperthermia treatment systemic and local thermotherapy. The systemic hyperthermia treatment is not often used because of its complicated technology and too many complica- tions. Therefore the local treatment, with its high rate of success and safety,is more widely used,es- pecially microwave and radio-frequency hyperther- mia. Many kinds of heating apparatuses have come into world. Hyperthermia treatment can be used independently or in combination with other therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. But there are still some problems with the treatment. For example, the mechanism of the hyperthermia treatment is not yet clear, the heating technology needs to be improved, the temperature measuring skills and the calorimetry technology in the treatment urgently needs to be solved, and so on. Planty of research work had been done in many coun- tries and areas in recent years. But the research of hyperthermia in our country begins late and is limited to some metropolis hospitals. We are confident and hopeful of hyperthermia's prospects.
