Track Nonlinear Energy Sink for Seismic Response Reduction Using Different Track Shapes

Track nonlinear energy sinks(Track NESs), a type of passive energy dissipation device featuring an auxiliary mass which moves along a specially shaped track, can reduce structural responses with their nonlinear restoring force. The optimized track NES using impulsive excitation performs well under impulsive excitations. The performance of track NES under seismic excitations, however, is to be enhanced. To this end, the parameters of the track NES are optimized using seismic excitations and different track shape functions are analyzed. The results show that the track NES with the third order polynomial track shape is more effective for seismic response reduction than other track shapes considered.
