Some Problems to be Considered with Respect to JCO Criticality Accident

A criticality accident occurred at the Tokai mura Conversion Plant subsidiary to JCO in Japan on 30th September,1999. Based on the written report by the IAEA expert team, a briefing is presented with respect to the course, emergency response measures taken and results of environmental monitoring and preliminary dose assessment. The cause, characteristics and effect on the environment of the accident are analysed, indicating that it was due to manmade error violating safety principles. The lessons from the accident and other problems such as news media are discussed.
