Changes of trace elemets in serum of rabbits with spinal cord injury

To study the changes of trace elements(TE) in serum after spinal cord injury (SCI), a weight drop technique was used to produce contusion of the SCI of L1~L2 in the rabbit. The changes of TE and major eleinents in serum of the rabbit were observed after SCI. The contents of TE Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu) , Iron (Fe) and major element Calcium(Ca), Magnesium (Mg) were measured by AAS. The results indicated that after SCI, the contents of Cu and Ca were increased, but Zn and Mg were decreased rapidly, and Fe was decreased slightly.There was a significantly negative correlation between Zn/Cu ratio and SCI, but a significantly positive correlation between Ca/Mg ratio and SCI. It is suggested that after SCI, the contents of TE in they were changed. To recover equilibrium of TE will be beneficial to the treatment of SCI.
