Discussion on earthquake action on steel structures

The calculation methods for earthquake action on steel structures,including the loading combinations and the base shear method are briefly introduced according to six Chinese codes(TJ11-74、TJ11-78、GBJ11-89、GB50011-2001、JGJ99-98、CECS160:2004).Based on the comparison of the results after normalization for the different codes,the levels of earthquake action for these codes are evaluated.The analysis shows that,the earthquake action levels are about the same,except that the earthquake action on steel structures for the JGJ99-98 and GB50011-2001 codes are obviously increased because of taking the damping ratios to be 0.02 or 0.035.Considering the earthquake action levels do not change much between the old and new seismic design codes for reinforced concrete structures and masonry structures,it is obviously irrational to raise the earthquake action levels of steel structures,which have good seismic performance.
