An ultrasonic transmission thickness measurement system for rivulet on the stay cable under rain-wind induced vibration

During simultaneous occurrence of wind and rain,the large amplitude rain-wind induced vibration(RWIV) may appears,and the water rivulets forming and oscillating around the cable surface of cable-stayed bridges are the key role for the RWIV occurrence.This paper develops an ultrasonic transmission thickness measurement system(UTTMS),which is capable of measuring the time-dependent spatial distribution of water rivulets vibrating around the surface of the cable when the RWIV is reproduced in the wind tunnel tests.Consequently,the oscillation of water rivulets around the cable can be obtained,providing valuable information for investigating the dynamics of RWIV phenomenon statistically and quantitatively.The measurement results indicate that a lower rivulet and an upper rivulet form on the surface of the test cable.The lower rivulet is unmoved,while the upper rivulet oscillates in the circumferential direction of the test cable.The oscillation amplitude,and equilibrium position of upper rivulets are analyzed and the dominant frequency is equal to the frequency of RWIV.
