Seismic damage to masonry structures in M7.0 Lushan earthquake

Masonry structure,either unconfined or confined,is one of the major structural systems in the area affected by the M7.0 Lushan earthquake in 2013.The characteristics of strong ground motions obtained during the earthquake are briefly discussed to show that the ground motions are rich in short-period contents,which may lead to heavy damage to stiff structures like masonry houses.Based on the materials collected during the emergency building inspection immediately after the earthquake,damage patterns of various types of masonry structures in areas with different intensities during the earthquake are summarized.Comparisons of damage rates befween unconfined and confined masonry structures show that the latter demonstrates much better seismic performance than the former.
