Laser Triggered Multistage Gas-Vacuum Mixed Switch

The electrical durability of the triggered vacuum switch is the bottleneck which impedes its development. To overcome this disadvantage,a new type of laser triggered switch based on laser triggering and fast operating mechanism is put forward. The operating mechanism can drive the electrodes of the laser-triggered gap in contact with each other when the working current is too large. Because the burning loss of the trigger material and the main electrodes is the main reason for the short working life of the laser triggered switches,the increase of the working life by the use of fast operating mechanism is evident and meaningful. The structure of the designed switch is firstly introduced and then simulated within the electrostatic field to optimize and determine the design parameters. In the following basic characteristic experiments,with 250 k V working voltage and 2 m J laser energy,the delay of the designed switch is 60 ns and its jitter is 5 ns. It is also found that with the increase of the laser energy or the working voltage across the switch,the delay and the jitter decrease significantly. The designed switch can be applied in the pulse power system which needs longer lifetime.
