A Map of Mount Wutai in Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Its Origin

by ZHANG Huiming
A map of Mount Wutai 五台山 can be seen in the Dunhuang Mogao Caves no.61 dated in the Five Dynasties. This map is very similar to that which had been found and recorded by Yuanren 圆 仁, a Japanese monk of the Tang Dynasty. Conclusion can be reached that the two were copied from same sample. The similar maps can he seen in the other caves, which belong to the middle Tang Dy- nasty (781-848). Comparing these maps with that of Central Plain, this paper thinks that the early copies for reproduction of the maps are originated from central China. The arts from Sogdian Area of Central Asia gave a strong influence on the maps of Mount Wutai.
