ZHANG Yongquan(The Chinese Culture and Humanity College of Zhejiang Normal University,Jinhua Zhejiang 321004)
Swung-dash① is a kind of ellipsis for taking place of the word which has appeared in the lemma in Chinese ancient encyclopedia, dictionary or work of phonetic annotation. This article discusses all forms of ellipsis signal, its usages and the origin of the swung-dash as well as differences between the swung-dash and the ditto mark and points out that the stylistic rule which is said to be a word association of the lemma actually is a result of omitting the swung-dash in the annotation. Many examples are given in the article to illuminate the importance of the study on the swung-dash in ancient books collation.
