So far,the protection and restoration of detached and damaged murals is mainly done by comparing or stitching the damaged relics directly. However, the touch and attrition during comparing or stitching always causes new damages, and all kinds of original information may be lost simultaneously. In particular, most of detached and damaged murals cannot be preserved in situ because of the uncertainty of their original positions, which may affect the real value and function of the murals. The digital image-processing technology,computer-aided design technique, and virtual-reality technology of computer and image-processing software are first used to simulate stitching and positioning of the mural fragments, and protecting and repairing cultural relics on this basis. The results indicate that the simulative stitching of fragmental murals in completely nondestructive conditions not only can provide accurate information for physical stitching and positioning and minimize the loss in stitching, but also can solve the problem that fragments can’t be preserved in situ because it is impossible to determine their original positions.
