Parallel sentences were frequently used in the scriptural tales of Dunhuang. Compared to traditional rhythmic prose, this style of writing is characterized by long, flowing parallel sentences, a complex crafting of antithesis within lines, the use of smooth and plain language free of literary allusion, and the forgoing of precision and taboo. The use of parallel sentences in scriptural tales is mainly observable in the following four aspects: describing persons and rendering scenes; directly advancing the development of the storyline; upgrading the literary charm of the tales; and helping with memorization. There is no reason for scriptural tales to exclude this type of parallel prose, which israther a technique any author might use to advantage.
