LONG Chengsong;Department of Chinese Literature, Dalian University of Technology;
The Dunhuang documents Dunwu Zhenzong Yaojue written by Houmochen Yan is an important work of early Northern Zen literature. Research of this document has mainly focused on its versions, structure,and implied Buddhist thought, with little attention paid to its author Houmochen Yan. The newly unearthed epitaphs memorializing Houmochen family generations from the Northern Dynasties to the Tang dynasty provide new information for studying Houmochen Yan, and the close relationship between the Houmochen family and Buddhism revealed by these stone inscriptions is important for understanding the background of Dunwu Zhenzong Yaojue.
