Outdoor Heritage Deterioration Monitoring:Method and Practice

This paper proposes an image analysis based method to monitor the evolution of cultural relic deterioration in outdoor environments, which helps to explain the changes in deterioration and thus provide reliable quantified evidence for preventative heritage protection. Specifically, we first propose a visual navigation camera re-localization method based on image analysis, which solves the problem of positioning and relocalization of monitoring equipment. We then present an illumination correction method based on image intrinsic decomposition and reconstruction to eliminate the negative influence of illumination caused by outdoor cultural relic imaging within complex illumination conditions. The results of monitoring the stone-sculpted relics of Qingkexuan and Liuyunge in the Summer Palace show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the differences in camera position and illumination during the monitoring of deteriorating outdoor cultural relics and thus obtain precision quantified evaluation of the changes in deterioration.
