Effect of Electrical Resistivity on EDM Performance of Engineering Ceramics

The electrical resistivity of the popular engineering ceramics is higher,and there is poor performance that direct use of electro-discharge machining(EDM). Taking ZnO/Al_2O_3 ceramics as an example,the effects of the electrical resistivity and EDM parameters such as pulse duration,pulse interval and tool polarity are studied. The results show that the ZnO/Al_2O_3 ceramic with the electrical resistivity up to 3410 Ω·cm can be effectively machined by EDM in the appropriate machining conditions.
