On the meaning-form conformity in translating Chinese classics——A case study in translating the chapter titles of The Classic of Tea

JIANG Yi, JIANG Xin(School of Foreign Languages,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China)
China boasts a sophisticated tea culture. The Classic of Tea written by Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty,is a representative work of this kind of classics.A perfect combination of the linguistic form and meaning can be seen from its chapter titles, which are informative in meaning and orderly in appearance, impressing the readers as its first face validity. This paper tries to discuss how to transfer this fine conformity into English from the perspective of socio-semiotic criterion.Different versions are compared and studied to see to what degree they have reached the requirements of "similarity in function, correspondence in meaning" so as to help introduce the Classic of Tea to the world.
