The Effect of Stasis on the Athenian Democracy

GUAN Xiao-zhou College of History,Nankai University,Tianjin 300071,China
Since the fifth century BC,in Athenian society, because of the establishment of democracy, the stasis happened mainly as faction strife, which was caused by particular political affairs among the politicians. On the one hand, the faction strife confused the Athenian politics and affected the administrative efficiency of the city state;on the other,it promoted the development of democracy in many aspects. In democratic Athens, although the faction strife happened frequently, the politics was stable, and the city state improved. This fact shows that some stasis did not lead to the unrest and decline of the city state.
