Joined Pottery Vessels in Lingnan Region During the Qin and Han Dynasties:The Five-Unit Jar as a Case

ZHOU Fan-wen;School of Sociology and Anthropology, Sun Yat-Sen University;
Various types of joined pottery vessels dating to the Qin and Han dynasties have been unearthed from the tombs in the Lingnan region, which has been regarded as a distinct feature of the local archaeological culture. A systematic review of these communicating vessels focusing on their distribution,forms, and accompanying wares as well as the background information of the tombs where they were unearthed indicates a multi-center radiant distribution in Lingnan area during the Qin and Han dynasties,which presents a hierarchy of quantity and variety decreasing from royal capitals, to county towns, then to ordinary counties. Meanwhile, offshore areas exceed inlands in terms of vessel number and variety. Joined vessels at their early stage developed various types. They were later dominated by the five-unit form, which however encountered a sudden disappearance later on. Examined from a broader context on their manufacturing technics, cultural identities, and functionalities, joined pottery vessels are believed to be a local product to the Nanyue Kingdom with the influence of foreign technics. Ties may have existed between these vessels and the"crescent-shaped cultural-communication belt"and the kernos/pseudokernos of the Mediterranean region.
